I just got done with "my long awaited (for me) 12 page risograph print set for Never Press. It was dragged out a little bit longer than expected due to deadlines, technical problems, and 2k11. The print set is called "Home." I am very happy with how each drawing turned out and find this set to be very fulfilling for me.

These drawings/prints were started on the public transit system in Los Angeles while commuting to and from work. "Home" isn't about public transit system, but a lot about the thoughts I was able to have on the public transit. I had recently graduated school and was supporting myself for the first time in my life. In a situation like that a lot of old ideas on "life", career, and priorities are challenged and questioned. These drawings were some recordings of those thoughts, questions and conclusions.

To touch a little on process, I did not make any of these images in order, nor did I know what these drawings were going to turn into (this is evident by the inconsistency in the characters). They were all being made and thought about as singular drawings. As I was wrapping up the drawings, an interesting story arch and common theme came forward (interesting to me at least). To me these drawings speak of leaving and returning, seeking and finding, and living and dying (amongst other things).

My friend Elizabeth is opening up a cafe called Drip in the heart of Korea Town. It's going to be an awesome space to speak, hear, see, feel, and consume. There's going to be art on the walls by my friends Eunice, Saejean, Jesse, and myself. There will be live music by Monsters Calling Home for the grand opening coming up next week. In other Never Press news, we were up at Ape earlier this month. My loose bound 12-set of prints will be coming out soon. I've been doing these "narratives" on the subway. Have a handful of them but contemplating whether to update them onto here as it may turn into a larger book project. We'll see what happens in the coming months.

Two weekends ago I was up in San Francisco for APE. Was a great weekend hanging and sharing a table with Ken Tanaka, Gary Musgrave, Jesse Fillingham, Cam Floyd and Janine (don't want to butcher her last name). APE itself is pretty overwhelming. Very cool.

At APE, I met people that I drew 2 years prior to meeting them.. yea. digest that one. Scary and exciting at the same time. They looked exactly like the couple on my bye-bye print. Cool thing is, they are a couple, and she was wearing a stripe shirt, just like the drawing. Funny, I would post a picture showing the similarities, but I'm not sure they would appreciate their faces being uploaded onto the web without their permission. maybe later on down the road.

Anyways, recently some friends and I put together a zine under © Pinch My Weenus. Here are some images from that project. The people include Anna Topuriya, Me, Gabe Gonzales, Eunice San Miguel, Jesse Fillingham, Mark Ingram and Nick Arciaga. Not up on any store right now, you can email Jesse for inquiries.

Also, I just finished up a book/zine and t-shirt project with Stickit, an independent publisher out in The Netherlands. The zine will be called "Some Malfunctions" and the cover might look something like this if there is no malfunction down the road... hahh.. unnecessary word play. Anywho, you should check them out and support the independent publishers. if you have the means to.

Will update when those get printed and ready.

i don't normally do this, but i'll give a little background on this piece only because much thanks is due to some great artists and friends. click their links and check them out.

this piece started with the age-old idea of control/chaos. early in the drawing, some "literal" chaos was made with the help of patrick hruby, jesse fillingham, and kaeleen wescoat-o'neil. after some chaos was made, i practiced to regain control of the image.

i'll leave it as that and not explain much more. hope you can experience something as i have in the process of creating the image.

heres a early picture caught with my phone's camera. it got way more chaotic than this with giant fingers and more foundation design sphere drawings.

at first i sort of wished i did one of those multiple "in-progress" shots to have a document of the changes. but maybe this is better because it's all in there anyways.. i'll have to think more about that..

readers, im back..

this is something i should have updated at the end the summer, but kind of got lazy.

over the summer, i got an opportunity to make the album artwork for The Nehemiah Band. I may have written about them before. It first started off as a "fake application/project" for a class at school, but after proposing the work to the band they took it. I had to change up a couple of stuff from the previous design, such as album title, some imagery, the way the cd case works, and some layouts. it was a fun project. challenge to deal with the requests by the printers and the band. i definately want to do more album projects.

this photo below was taken when i finished the "fake application" last spring.

pretty amazing photo ey.. i had to pay big bucks for that from a professional fotographer. kinda sucks that i have this nice photo of the "fake" version instead of the actual cd that was released. but it works nicely as a portfolio piece anyways. (side note, if any photographers have any tips on white balance please let me know. i have a dslr, i usually shoot auto, or tungstein when im indoors and rely on auto levels in photoshop to help the white balance. im a noob. i'd appreciate any tips either through comments or through email. Thankssss!)

couple weeks ago i made the band a t-shirt design. recently, i've been liking the look of blowing a small doodle up huge. the grittiness and the unspecificity (yes, i just made up that word) of the blown up lines/drawing is quite awesome.

i havent seen the shirt yet, but i hear there was a lot of printing problems. sadly, of all the t-shirt jobs i did and sent to printers, on almost 90 percent of them something goes wrong and doesnt come out the way i had expected it to. its one of the bigger let downs and it takes a couple hours to a day for me to get it out of my mind. i cringe everytime i see someone wearing a messed up t-shirt. sucks. thats why you gotta print em yourself~

i'm not sure if i had written about this, but i just moved out to pasadena. its awesome, a lot more places to grub at night, a lot more sirens and car alarms going off, and a lot more opportunities to ride the bike. two weeks ago, i took a spill cause some bad driver in a suv. long story short. i have this battle wound thats spewing out dark red orangish puss. its awesome. enjoy. hope you're not eating as you're reading this entry.

been a long time. need to get back on track with this stuff.

heres a very small zine made from a "think green zine" class from ArtCenter. decided to use this world wide web to spread this zine. click the bottom link to download a pdf version of the "the day i tried.." zine from uploader.com. this ones more of a test run to see the response to this. i will be making a lot more freebie zines for cyber space, so please stay tuned. in process of making a zine from a compilation of sketchbook drawings. in the mean time please enjoy this short and sweet one.

I've run away off to China. I've been working with this one musical organization and they flew me over to do some direction stuff working on props and backdrops. This summer I worked on some posters, tickets, postcards and shirts for them. if you ever go out to korea town, you might have seen some. But yea, free trip to China? i'm down. Here are only a few of the pictures i took from China either from Beijing, Xi'an or Qingdao.

many thanks to those that came out last sunday to the open market in
pasadena! it was a beautiful day and I had a blast just hanging out with
friends and the pasadena art community. I got to sell some paintings,
prints, and many zines/shirts! look forward to the next one!

the picture above was taken from this show orange cube, in arcadia, put
on last weekend. and I give out my thanks to that family for the
opportune. some of those students are going to do crazy things in the
future.

other news. I worked on a poster design. and I get to work with korean
type. hahaha. I've never really typed in korean. nor do I know how to
write and spell properly in korean. we'll see how that goes. ahahaha.

illustrative storytelling w. the awesome jeff smith! (picture taken at the union station) fun class. relaxing class. hard class. great class.

some life drawings from the class. it was one of the most relaxing, re-energizing, inspiring times out of the week to get away from the classroom for couple hours, hang out w. friends and just draw. very cool

visual journalism finals. i documented the nehemiah band's music video shoot. these drawings isn't necessarily centered around the band, but just the documentation of the time there. also, thanks to eray, the band, and the camera crew for letting my linger around shooting photos that night.
